OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): The Brand Designs the Product and Outsources Manufacturing

The role of an OEM is relatively straightforward. The brand already has a complete product design, including specifications, circuit diagrams, mechanical drawings, and possibly even a validated prototype, but lacks the production capacity or equipment needed for mass manufacturing.

In this case, the brand is looking for a manufacturing partner that can build according to the provided design. An OEM’s expertise generally lies in production management, quality control, and supply chain management, but it usually does not participate in product design decisions.


ODM (Original Design Manufacturer): The Manufacturer Provides an Existing Design That the Brand Customizes

An ODM already has an existing product design or development platform. The brand can customize elements such as the appearance, color, logo, and selected functions before launching the product under its own name.

This model offers faster time to market and relatively lower development costs. However, the degree of customization is limited by what can be changed within the original platform.


DMS (Design and Manufacturing Services): An End-to-End Service from Requirements to Design and Manufacturing

DMS combines design and manufacturing within a single service. The brand begins with a product concept or set of requirements, and the development partner helps complete the hardware design, software and firmware development, testing and validation, certification applications, and mass production.

  • For ODM, prepare the product positioning and customization requirements. This includes the desired appearance, target price, functions that need to be modified, and estimated order quantity. Detailed engineering specifications are generally unnecessary, but the brand must clearly explain how it wants the product to differ from the existing platform.

  • For DMS, prepare market information rather than technical specifications. Define the target users, the problem the product should solve, the expected price range, target markets, and desired launch schedule. The brand does not need to understand communication protocols, chipsets, or mechanical design in advance.
